Why you need med pay coverage – now

April 11, 2014 by Jonathan Stein

You have choices when it comes to med pay. Wait, what is med pay? Med pay is the short hand for medical payments coverage. This is the coverage that pays YOUR medical bills incurred as a result of a car crash – regardless of who is at fault!

Now back to our regular post…………Of course, if you don’t ask about these options, no one will tell you about them.

Some of the basic choices are whether the med pay coverage is primary or excess. Primary med pay coverage means that the insurance company pays your medical bills before any other insurance you may have, such as health insurance. Excess med pay coverage means that the insurance company will pay after any other insurance pays, including health insurance. Which is better for you? It depends on your situation.

You also have choices regarding reimbursement. Some insurance companies are now offering a choice as to whether you have to reimburse them upon settlement of a claim with the other party. Of course, not reimbursing them what they paid out costs you more money in premium, but it is not much more in terms of premium. Some insurance companies are not offering any choices, but you have to check with your agent.

Of course, one of the biggest options is your coverage limit. You can get coverage with a minimum limit of $1,000 and up to $50,000. The more coverage you get, the more the premium is going to be.

When shopping for auto insurance, ask about med pay coverage. You may have choices that you did not know about. This coverage can provide important protection for you and your family.
