Watch out for Infinity Insurance’s Policy

March 21, 2014 by Jonathan Stein

Are you insured with Infinity Insurance? Have you read your policy lately? If you are insured with Infinity, you need to stop reading this, get a copy of your policy and read it now.

Why the urgent need? Infinity has a policy that I came across for the first time today. It is a policy where, if your car is damaged, the collision coverage pays you less a copay and a deductible. Think about that for a second.

If you are insured with most insurance companies, when your car is damaged, you pay a deductible. Most people have a $500 deductible. Let’s say the repairs are $10,000. Your insurance company pays $9,500 and you pay $500. The body shop gets paid $10,000.

Infinity sells a policy like this. Its fine. But they sell a more nefarious policy that you must watch out for.

The 2nd policy Infinity Insurance sells has a copay and a deductible if you go to a shop that is not an approved shop. Same $10,000 damage to your car. If you go to a repair shop, you pay your $500 deductible. However, if you decide you want to have your own shop repair your car, you pay $2,000 in a copay plus $500 in your deductible. Yes, that means you would pay $2,500 and the Infinity would only pay $7,500.

Remember, in California, you have the right to have your car fixed at the shop of your choice. This is written into the Auto Body Bill of Rights. It is your choice. This policy basically takes away that right or forces you to pay a significant penalty for having your own shop repair your car.

How do you know if you have this policy? You need to read it. If you do not understand it, you should talk to someone and ask questions. If you still do not understand, email me for a free review and then find a new insurance company. There is no reason to keep an insurance policy with a copay and a deductible!
