Move over after an accident

December 12, 2013 by Jonathan Stein

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has started a new campaign. The electronic signs on the freeway politely remind motorists to move out of traffic if they are involved in a minor car crash.

This is great advice – and often something that people ignore. I have said it for years. If your car is not drivable, leave it. Don’t try to push it out of the way. However, if your car is driveable, then you should drive it to the shoulder and get out of the way.

Why would you do this? First, the location of the cars would be documented by debris. Second, you can take a picture or two before you move the car. Third, while you are sitting in traffic, you will be causing delays to everyone else. But, most importantly, you are at risk for being hit by another motorist and being invovled in another accident, maybe a more serious one since you may be out of your car!

Please, if you are involved in a minor accident, move your car off to the shoulder!
