Private Property – Do the police come?

January 6, 2006 by Jonathan Stein

Someone called my office this week and asked why the police cited him for being in an accident on private property. He was technically cited for no license and no insurance. OOPS!

Here is why: the laws of the road still apply on private property. If you are driving a vehicle without insurance, you are still breaking the law. If you do not have a license and are driving a vehicle, you are still breaking the law.

The police will generally not come out to an accident in a parking lot. The primary reason is that they are too busy. But if you insist, they will eventually show up.

Just make sure that you have not done anything wrong before you insist too strongly!
