A discount for hybrids?

January 7, 2006 by Jonathan Stein

Yes. A discount for hybrid owners. In addition to having low fuel costs, better mileage, and helping the environment, hybrid owners are now going to be able to get a discount on their insurance.

Travelers is going to start giving hybrid owners a discount on insurance. Travelers says their typical hybrid insured is between 41 and 60 and is mixed equally between male and female. The typical hybrid owner drives within speed limits and uses the car to commute to and from work.

I think this is a good idea. I am not sure if the actuarial numbers will back it up, but any reason we can give people to drive hybrids is good with me.

Of course, there is some basis for giving hybrid owners a discount. They are less likely to cause a lot of damage than an SUV. They are less likely to tip or roll over. They are less likely to speed or drive fast and cause serious accidents.

I think Travelers deserves credit for this one!
