Who to insure with?

November 20, 2005 by Jonathan Stein

I was reading through Google groups (which can be fun reading!) today and there was a discussion about what insurance company people should get. One person was looking for insurance and others were chiming in with their opinions.

The answer as to what insurance company you should go with depends on your situation. If you are a member of an organization such as the military or a professional organization, you may get a discount. USAA insures only military members, former military members and their families. If you qualify, the insurance is relatively inexpensive.

Remember though that price is not the only thing to look at. You also want to check AM Best for the insurance companies rating. And the most important thing may be the claims history. Your state department of insurance will have information on complaints made against insurance companies. You should look at this and avoid insurance companies with a large number of claims per 1,000 policies written.

If you look at price, rating and complaints, you will find the right insurance company for you.
