California Debt Blog: Foreclosed Properties Driving You Crazy?

September 21, 2008 by Jonathan Stein

Are you living in a neighborhood with a lot of foreclosures? Are the foreclosed homes bringing in vagrants, vandals and Viacom? (Okay, work with me – it is Sunday and I had no where to go with that!) What to do?

California Lawyer magazine has a great article by Jeanette Borzo in this month’s edition called “Keeping House.” The article starts “As tens of thousands of foreclosed homes in California dot thelandscape, local governments have found a new way to keep them frombecoming an eyesore: Threaten the lender.”

Now, there are a lot of cities that do not have laws on the books to threaten lenders. But, there are some that due. If you have eyesores in your neighborhood, start with a phone call to your local building department. See what they can do for you. If they cannot assist you, then talk to your city council about getting a law like this passed.

The best way to maintain home values and pull us out of this market is to keep eyesores from becoming a bigger problem. This is one way to do that.
