California Debt Blog: Verification, Verification, Verification

July 11, 2007 by Jonathan Stein

We all know that the 3 most important things in retail are location, location, location. Well, the three most things when you are contacted by a debt collection agency are verification, verification, verification. Many times, they do not have any verification. The debt collector bought a list of debtors and the amount of the debt. They send letters hoping people will pay or they will sue and get a default judgment. Then they never have to prove the debt.

However, you need to ask for verification. No, demand verification. And do it within 30 days. I even have a sample letter on here for you to use. You need to get verification of the debt. Make sure it is you, even if you have the most unusual name in the world. If they can’t verify the debt, they may just go away.
