FAQ: I rent. Do I need renter’s insurance?

January 12, 2007 by Jonathan Stein

Q: I rent an apartment. Do I really need renter’s insurance?

A: I am glad you asked about this. More renters need to get renters insurance. It is relatively inexpensive (under $300 per year) and provides great coverage.

First, your auto insurance company will give you a discount if you get both policies with them. This is similar to the discount you get if your homeowners policy with the same company. It is called a multi-policy discount and it is a good thing.

Second, there are no companies that I know that provide renters only quotes. You may want to visit this link and click on rate comparisons. (The link connects you to the Department of Insurance!)
