What do you do when your homeowners claim is denied?

February 10, 2006 by Jonathan Stein

When you file a claim with your homeowners insurance company, they may deny it. Some things are not covered. Some things are covered, but the insurance company still will not pay the claim. What do you do when this happens?

You have a few options. First, you should ask for a copy of the denial letter. All denial letters must be in writing and must cite the specific portion of the policy that provides there is no coverage. Second, you should call the Department of Insurance and file a complaint. Third, you should speak with an attorney experienced in insurance claims immediately. There are some tricky rules to what is and is not covered and you have certain time lines within which to act.Make sure you protect your rights!
